Axolotl Population In Jeopardy

Ancient Aztecs worshipped the axolotl, a distinctive amphibian. Its natural habitat is in Xochimilco, Mexico, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Urbanization, pollution, and the introduction of predators have caused the axolotl population to take a nosedive. Compare the 6,000 axolotls per square kilometer in 1998 to the less than 1 per square kilometer found today.
