A 10-year-old boy from Bologna, Italy began having seizures, so his parents took him to the doctor. His dark teeth indicated the cause of his seizures. When black licorice is eaten in large amounts, its active ingredient, glycyrrhizic acid, may cause serious side effects. The child had been eating up to 20 black licorice sticks per day for months.
